Chippy shut after evidence of bugs and mice found

A CHIP shop has been closed amid allegations it is “infested” with mice and insects. Inspectors from the city council visited the Clifton Fish Bar in Haymarket this week and immediately closed the premises amid fears of an “imminent risk” to the public. It is not the first time the takeaway has failed an inspection – its owner wasADVERTISEMENT fined £1200 in 2009 after officials found a dead mouse. At the time, Carlo Corolla blamed the ongoing tram works, saying that drilling and digging nearby had forced vermin to take refuge in his shop. Inspectors again visited the shop this week after a complaint about “poor standards of hygiene”.They are said to have found clear evidence of insect and mouse infestations, as well as poor maintenance, contamination of crockery and containers and a lack of adequate cleaning.A notice attached to the front of the shop said inspectors had found hide beetles and larvae on the floor and in food containers. The Clifton Terrace restaurant was also alleged to have mouse droppings near food and equipment and flies were also seen.Council officials said there had been no evidence that any pest control measures were in place at the chip shop.A spokeswoman for the council said: “Officers considered the conditions were a risk to public health and the premises had to immediately close. “The matter will now be heard in the Sheriff Court.” Inspectors issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice after deeming the takeaway to constitute an “imminent risk to the health of customers”.The premises must now be revisited before officials are satisfied that a clean-up operation has taken place and that the establishment can reopen. Mr Corolla, who was last night working in the Kingfisher fish and chip shop in Bread Street, declined to comment.Last year the Evening News published details of 130 restaurants across the city which had failed inspections. The discovery of rats, mice, beetles and cockroaches were just some of the problems noted by the environmental health department. The routine inspections included a litany of other failings, including slime-covered equipment and a cafe with no hot running water.
