Cyclists set up fan-friendly training course in Lake Park

LAKE PARK

Matt Goforth participated in his first cycling criterium, or crit, five years ago at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound.

In May, the long-time cyclist brought the popular short-course racing format to Lake Park.

The area really needed something to do during the summer in the evening hours, said Goforth, 35, who runs On Your Mark Performance Center, a cycling specialty store and racing club in Lake Park. It’s typically hot during the day. When we founded our cycling club, I thought it was a great opportunity for the cycling club to generate some revenue.

After searching for a venue to stage the training crits, which typically last 45 minutes plus three laps, Goforth and his club settled on the corner of Watertower Road and 13th Street.

The area is closed off during twice-monthly races, which are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month and are open to riders of all ability levels.

I got with the town and discovered a way to close off the road just for an hour, Goforth said. We found a nice little course. It’s got a nice little elevated chain. It’s really short and spectator-friendly. It’s quiet, but perfect.

Since the crits began in May, they have drawn an average of about 20 participants, volunteers and spectators. The races are for training purposes only, so prizes are not given to the top finishers.

It’s just for bragging rights, Goforth said.

Entry fee is $10 for the first race and $5 for additional races. A USA Cycling license is required, though participants can purchase a one-day pass for $5 at the starting line. A portion of the proceeds benefits Lake Park’s Community Redevelopment Agency summer youth program.

Crits are scheduled for July 20, Aug. 3, Aug. 17, Sept. 7 and Sept. 21. All races begin at 6:15 p.m.
