Life Technologies Inc announced the acquisition of Ion Torrent, maker of nex-gen sequencing systems for $350 million in cash and stock plus an additional $350 million if 2012 milestones are met.
Ion Torrent has an affordable, bench top gene sequencing system at a price point of under $100,000.  It makes this an ideal choice for mid-scale sequencing research projects.  The news isn’t surprising, since founder Jonathon Rothberg started 454 Life Sciences, which was acquired by Roche three years ago.  Rothberg also started RainDance Technologies.
Ion Torrent is in a race with other companies such as Pacific Biosciences and Complete Genomics, both of which have filed for public offerings.  Gen-Probe invested $50 million in Pacific Biosciences.
